Identity Theft Stories
"Oh, I know Jane, signing up for credit cards is annoying! Yeah, uh-huh, I just got done filling out the forms. I'm going to mail them tommorrow. Well, goodbye, I'm going out to lunch with my boss. See ya." Lori says to her broke and desperate neighbor, who just so happens to know the code to get into her house that has her social security number, bank account number, and credit cards, all splayed across the table. Once Jane is sure Lori is gone and noone is outside to witness this, she enters the house and records all of this vital data. After Jane returns to her own house, she pays the overdue mortgage and the electric bill, trying not to think about what she just did. "Survival of the fittest," she thinks, "this money is nothing to them. It was just this once..."
Seven months later Lori is still trying to figure out who has stolen her identity and all of this money every month. "Who would do this? Who could have done this? I've always been so careful..." But not careful enough, because you gave someone your code into your house, which is filled with hidden and private information, you unknowingly allowed someone to steal your identity...
Story #2
"Ha!" She thinks, "People are sooo dumb! Just throwing their social security number and all this potential money around. Jeesh. I'll show 'em for their stupidity!" She pulled a moldy envelope filled with someone's information. "Jackpot! Dumpster diving may not be glamorous, but the money you get sure is! This will pay the rent, and get my food, and be my money!" She looks at the name on the papers. "Chelle Morris. Huh! Poor sap, we even look alike! This will be a peice o' cake..."
Two months later Chelle Morris checks her account and finds mistakes. again. She calls up the company and tells them about the mistakes. The lady on the phone sighs and tells her that her identity might have been stolen and to call the police immediately. After explaining to the police her story, Chelle thinks, "How? How did this happen?" Well, throwing away important information is not a good idea. Make sure you shred it before you throw it away.
